At 18, most kids in institutional care are expected to just... figure it out. No safety net. No one to call. Just the door closing behind them.

That's the reality we think about every time we sit down with a student to work through a problem.

Because when a volunteer helps with homework, something bigger is happening. The student isn't just getting an answer. They're learning how to think through something hard, how to try again when they're stuck, how to trust that they can work it out.

Those are the skills that carry a person through life after 18. Not a test score. The habit of not giving up.
