The Path to Ending Child Abuse in Japan

“Together, little by little we can help make a difference.”

When abuse results in death, we cannot turn a blind eye any longer, as adults who are capable of making real changes and have far more rights in choices, it is essential that we make sensible decisions, knowing its impact. In 2020, an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) based in Kumamoto, Caitlin Puzzar, addressed the issue head on by working with a team  to propose ideas for an app that kids could use at school to reveal instances of child abuse, at The WISE Program (startup initiative) (a collaboration between Japan Institute for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship (JSIE) and Kumamoto Prefecture).

“THE IDEA CAME FROM MY ‘AT SCHOOL’ EXPERIENCE, BACKGROUND, CONCERNS ABOUT CHILD ABUSE AND A FEW OTHERS...,” - CAITLIN PUZZAR

Caitlin Puzzar’s team won the award for best idea, was invited to present it in front of angel investors, and got funding to eventually launch the app. Now, three schools are trailing out with the support of the Kumamoto City Board of Education.

The app is an online questionnaire designed to reveal child abuse, bullying, mental health issues and so forth at school and in the home. Caitlin Puzzar states that the app asks questions which address a wider set of issues than do similar surveys in current use in Japan.

There is no need to wait or hesitate when it comes to making a choice that you know will make a significant difference. In recent years, regardless of the fight for change in laws or the call for actions to protect the rights of children, the cases of child abuse is nevertheless still on the rise. Instead of asking more questions, start to take action, because the support of society as a whole is the solution to the problem at hand.

“START, BY ACKNOWLEDGING AND SUPPORTING PATHS TO ENDING CHILD ABUSE.”
